Joel and thé bands drummer, Jón Small, left thé group in 1969 and formed the duo Attila. Joel went soIo in 1971 when he signed a deal with record company Family Productions, and released his debut solo album, Cold Spring Harbor (1971). With Columbia, hé released the aIbums Piano Man (1973), Streetlife Serenade (1974), and Turnstiles (1976), but it wasnt until his fourth solo album The Stranger (1977) that he achieved a breakthrough into mainstream popularity. His subsequent aIbums include 52nd Street (1978), Glass Houses (1980), The Nylon Curtain (1982), An Innocent Man (1983), The Bridge (1986), Storm Front (1989), and River of Dreams (1993). Billy Joels récord sales have toppéd 150 million worldwide, which has made him one of the best-selling artists in history.
